Dangerous roads do lead to beautiful destinations – Rohtang Pass

Rohtang Pass is situated about 53km away from the Manali Town. Rohtang in Hindi means “a pile of corpses” as many people have died trying to cross the pass. This is located at a height of 3,798m and it is the highest point in the Manali-Keylong Road. The road is closed during the winter season but opens during summer. Even in summer you can see snow in this area.

Most important thing is only 1,200 vehicles per day are allowed to visit Rohtang Pass and the process to obtain a permit is also cumbersome (For more information on permits visit this site – http://admis.hp.nic.in/ngtkullu/  ). Due to the limited time we had we hired a local cab from Manali for INR 7,500 to visit Rohtang Pass. It is good if you can leave your hotel at least around 4am to avoid the traffic. The website says that Rohtang Pass is closed on Tuesdays.

It is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever visited and first time to see snow. If you are visiting Manali during summer, this place is a “must-visit”.
